Tagline: What happens when the oil runs out?
"This documentary examines the state of the world's dwindling oil resources and finds that we're running out of fossil fuels much sooner than anticipated. Industry leaders and scientists such as Matt Simmons, Colin Campbell, Fadhil Chalabhi, David Goodstein and many others lend insights into the dire consequences the world is facing as it moves from cheap abundant energy supply to scarce, inaccessible and expensive energy." - LavaTV
"Oil Crash, produced and directed by award-winning European journalists and filmmakers Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack, tells the story of how our civilization’s addiction to oil puts it on a collision course with geology. Compelling, intelligent, and highly entertaining, the film visits with the world’s top experts and comes to a startling, but logical conclusion – our industrial society, built on cheap and readily available oil, must be completely re-imagined and overhauled. The idea that the world’s oil supplies have peaked, or will soon, is gaining mainstream currency.
Robert B.
Semple, Jr., associate editor of the New York Times editorial board, writes
in the paper’s March 1, 2006, online edition:
“The Age of Oil — 100-plus years of astonishing economic growth
made possible by cheap, abundant oil — could be ending without our really
being aware of it. Oil is a finite commodity. At some point even the vast
reservoirs of Saudi Arabia will run dry. But before that happens there will
come a day when oil production ‘peaks,’ when demand overtakes
supply (and never looks back), resulting in large and possibly catastrophic
price increases that could make today's $60-a-barrel oil look like chump change.
Unless, of course, we begin to develop substitutes for oil. Or begin to live
more abstemiously. Or both. The concept of peak oil has not been widely written
about. But people are talking about it now. It deserves a careful look —
largely because it is almost certainly correct.” Semple concludes: “These
[are] not doomsday scenarios from conspiracy theorists, but hard scientific
facts backed by serious research.”" - www.oilcrashmovie.com

Tagline: Do not rush to judge.
Years after the assassination of President George W. Bush in Chicago on October 19th 2007 (6-days from now), an investigative documentary examines that as-yet-unsolved crime. Genius filmmaking at it's best. It controversially star's George W. Bush himself. WOW, eh!!! Death of a President had been labeled "controversial" long before this film hit U.S. shores. That Bush was assassinated in this film isn't really the issue. The real issue in this film is the sequence of events that the assassination set in motion. It's about how the current state of national fear and paranoia could produce the results that the film depicts in the AFTERMATH of the fictional assassination. It's about how contradictory evidence is suppressed or ignored, stereotypes are reinforced, rights are willingly surrendered by a frightened public, and hatred is stoked. It's about how a mere tidbit of dubious information (the questionable smudged fingerprint) can be hyped by politicians with an agenda into international confrontation. The film was an excellent and insightful commentary on the current state of political affairs in the United States. British director and co-writer, Gabriel Range first introduced his film on U.K. television, and later at the Toronto International Film Festival where it won the International Critic's prize. This film has been given limited release in U.S. For shame folks!!!

Tagline: No children. No future. No hope.
London, November 16, 2027: Baby Diego has just died. He was dee last person born on earth. He was 18 years old!!! What an opening to the best studio film to come along this decade. Y'arrr!!! Set in 2027, when no child has been born for 18 years and science is at loss to explain the reason, African and East European societies collapse and their dwindling populations migrate to England and other wealthy nations. In a climate of nationalistic violence, a London peace activist turned bureaucrat Theo Faron, joins forces with his revolutionary ex-wife Julian in order to save mankind by protecting a woman who has mysterious secret. I love this monumental flic. If there ever was an heir-apparent to Sir Stanley Kubrick it's certainly Alfonso Cuarón. His long single-take shots are almost always moving and sweeping. One shot moves through what seems 10-12 block area and up and down an apartment building. We are drawn into dee story so well that we are there, living it like his character. This story does remind me soooooo much of Kafka's The Trail, where the Castle here is replaced by the Ministry of Energy, where dee films lead Theo Faron works. Y'arrr!!! Don't miss it folks!!!
(NB: I chose Children of Men as a natural follow-up flic to Josephine's two selected films above. Children of Men certainly gives a great glimpse of dee very near future of oil, and what will happen if we continue along this slippery-slope that we are on. I do know that most of you that have already seen this flic will have missed this important backdrop. See it again in light of this evenings programming. Y'arrr!!!)

The Anarchy & Alchemy of Alejandro Jodorowsky!!!
ShangOrama.com's 2nd annual Halloween-night tradition continues. Y'arrr!!!
Alexandro Jodorowsky is a director of fascinating films (El Topo, The Holy Mountain, Santa Sangre...), founder of the "Panique" movement (his mime projects with Marcel Marceau), performer of provocative happenings, successful comic strip writer (the Incal, Aleph Tau, The White Lama...), animator of the "Mystical Cabaret", Tarot card master, launcher of the "psycho-magic", the list could go on and on. It is unfortunate that not everyone has heard of him and his art or has had the experience of viewing his extondianary films.
"And I imagine...with great pleasure...all the horrible stirrings of the non-manifested to bring forth the scream which creates the universe. Maybe one day I'll see you trembling, and you'll go into convulsions and grow larger and smaller until your mouth opens and the world will come from your mouth, escaping through the window like a river, and it will flood the city. And then we'll begin to live." - Alexandro Jodorowsky, 1971
